Photography by Maria Paula Armelin. ABOUT 123 HOUSE Gut renovation and two story addition on an 1890’s row house in Brooklyn’s Red Hook neighborhood. The design of this townhouse sets out to utilize natural, reclaimed, and common materials in a contemporary fashion. Tribeca Loft, New York by Andrew Franz Architect
📷 Albert Vecerka/Esto.Size – 3,000 SF Completion – 2013 From the architects’ website: In Manhattan’s landmarked Tribeca North, the top floor and roof of an 1884 caviar warehouse are reconceived as a warm and open residence. The design, guided with a goal of a sustainable and healthy, living environment, features a relocated mezzanine with a planted interior court which connects to the new green roof garden. Embracing the building’s industrial past, a visual discourse between new and old is devised through insertions of modern materials along with restored or reclaimed materials.

Hudson Street Mixed-Use Townhouse, Greenwich Village, NYC by Andrew Franz Architect
📷 Albert Vecerka/Esto. From the architects’ website: For this 1930s red-brick townhouse in New York’s Greenwich Village Historic District, we renovated and enlarged the existing mixed-use building to add functionality, openness, and green space. The landmarked façade was restored, including the wooden storefront at the street level. The building, which includes a restaurant on the ground floor and residential units on the upper floors, was extended in the rear creating levels of patios and terraces. A rooftop addition with a ribbon of casement windows serves as an expanded living area adjacent to a new urban roof garden.

Locomotive Ranch Trailer, Austin, Texas by Andrew Hinman Architecture
Photography by Paul Bardagjy. From the architects: “One of the client’s cherished possessions is a vintage streamlined aluminum house (not travel) trailer, and he wanted to relocate the trailer to the family’s favorite spot on their South Texas ranch overlooking the Nueces River. Given the fragile geology and the flash-flood prone nature of the riverside location, the trailer’s foundation and protection required special considerations. The resulting solution is a steel-framed, metal-roofed cradle, right at home amongst the existing rain barns and ranch equipment sheds. The cradle lifts the trailer above the floodplain and provides accessory components, sweeping river views, and safe access to the fishing/swimming hole. The cradle is anchored…

River Road Renovation, Hunting Valley, Ohio by Peninsula Architects
From the architects: Located in the heart of the Chagrin Valley, this renovation of a late 1800’s farmhouse transforms the house from a series of isolated dark spaces into a place of light and connection to the landscape. The original house was gutted and restructured to accommodate a more open floor plan, yet leaving the exterior walls and window locations to remain intact. Standing in stark juxtaposition to the original house is the new dining room and family room wing. A tall wood form reminiscent of an agrarian grain silo forms the dining room and acts as a hinge between the solid form of the existing farmhouse and the more…
